I love how the beginning of a New Year seems to hit a “reset” button in my own life and home. I've never been one to make Resolutions, but I do set goals and am better about staying focused earlier in the year. Trying to have better habits would be the best way to describe it.
After the Christmas decorations have come down, I use that opportunity to deep clean my house. All the furniture gets moved and we clean out underneath it. Hello kitten toys! Gotta love my crazy kittens. Every little thing, top to bottom, is clean and ready for a new beginning. I also find I rearrange a little, or try some fresh accessories. Perhaps that’s an occupational hazard?
I’ve been working to get the Presentations ready for two different clients and I’m excited about how their rooms are coming together. S&J’s room is based off their existing rug in a palette of terracotta, navy, cream, and sage. K&S’s home is in the mountains of West Virginia and I’m working with their chosen colors of gray, blue, and green. I’m surprising them by adding in a pop of yellow. I’ll share a sneak peek of that one in the Behind-the-Scenes section of this newsletter.
I spent some time in early January redesigning my web site. Figuring out how to get this newsletter formatted has taken more time than I bargained for, but I’m getting the hang of it. One of my character flaws is that I don’t delegate very well. I like control, and if I don’t know how to do it, well, that’s what Google is for, right? I love the new logos and colors within the site. I hope you find it easy to navigate, and as this is my first run with the new newsletter format, I’m certain I will get better at it as time goes on.
Please feel free to shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and offer feedback. I value your opinion!
Wishing you a wonderful beginning to 2018!

A few words from a happy client:
After finding Crystal listed on the Houzz website and having a lengthy conversation regarding the details of our project, our decision was made immediately due to Crystal’s professional knowledge and ability to work within our timeline. Crystal was able to select appropriate furniture and décor for a large sorority space that needed to follow university guidelines as well as national organization guidelines and met our deadline with a close eye on our budget. Crystal was able to take a specific color palette and transform our vision into a realty with custom window treatments, on trend décor and durable furniture. I would highly recommend Bluestone Decorating for future projects and enjoyed working with Crystal at each level.
– Sheila Mendoza, Housing Coordinator, Phi Mu Headquarters
Crystal’s initial consultation gave me direction in the rooms that I wanted to focus on. She was easy to talk to and able to respect my style while providing advice on what to think about when choosing the furniture I need. I’m very glad I called her!”
– Michelle, Harrisonburg, VA
Crystal Ortiz came to my home at my convenience. She answered my questions regarding improvements to furniture layout, decor, and colors in each of the rooms. She was both respectful and attentive to my questions, concerns, and requests. Crystal even suggested ideas for making certain rooms (such as a small child’s room) storage efficient and child friendly. Her help was invaluable. Hearing her ideas and encouragement reinforced my hopes for my home.
~ Donna – Massanutten, Virginia
We contracted Bluestone Decorating for our office and lobby renovation and we are very happy with Crystal’s design and decorating expertise! Our customers love it!
~ Kathy, AutoBody Pro Shop, Harrisonburg VA
I had a very difficult kitchen layout and could not figure out how to reconfigure the layout. Crystal had several ideas that made my kitchen function more efficiently. She came to my house and immediately just starting shooting out several ideas that made so much more sense than what I originally had. She had a great eye for detail and asked several questions to really find out how our family would benefit from the changes. I am very pleased with the new design.
~ Terry – Massanutten, Virginia
Great to work worth! I was struggling with some color selections / decor in north facing rooms and she was tremendous help. She got the project off the ground quickly. Fun to work with and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
~ Dona, McGaheysville VA
Crystal Ortiz of Bluestone Decorating is exactly who I needed to help me decorate my mountain farm home. I know nothing about decorating and I am color blind. Crystal was just what I needed. She met with me and found out what I needed. She came back with suggestions and budgets to accomplish my goal. The final decision was always mine. I like that I got a budget figure before we began the project. She delivered on the budget and on the schedule. Crystal kept me informed of progress every step of the way.Her ideas and suggestions were right on the money. I love what she did for me and I am looking forward to enjoying my “new” farm house. I would definitely hire her again. She was honest and forthright with me and she bent over backwards to deliver what I wanted.
~ Wayne O’Bryan
Crystal provided excellent and professional service. She was very helpful in assisting with ideas for my new house. She had great suggestions on how to incorporate old decorations with new items. I would highly recommend Crystal’s service for helping you with all your decoration needs.
~ Lorie, Harrisonburg, Virginia
Crystal decorated my sorority house living space. Having to please 250 girls is quite the challenge and Crystal did such an amazing job taking the time to learn our chapter’s personality and how to best reflect us through the space. She was extremely easy to work with and flexible with us. I would definitely recommend working with her!”
– Emily, Phi Mu Gamma Theta, James Madison University
Crystal Ortiz really took the time to look through my ideas and get an understanding of my style. She pointed out some different things about our floor plan that we might want to consider, and, in particular, helped guide me in understanding what I was likely looking for in a few rooms in the house that had me stumped. She did a great job.

Color Inspirations: Purples
Purple is “hot” this year. Pantone chose Ultraviolet as its Color of the Year. I’ve got some ideas to share with you for using shades of purple in your home decorating.
This color is highly saturated and might be outside your comfort zone. Pair it with golden yellow, turquoise, and add some bright white to really help it stand out.
Choosing the Right Paint Sheen
You may have the perfect color, but getting the sheen right can make or break your project.

Behind the Scenes: K & S’s Mountain Home
I’ve been working on this project since September. The homeowners are a couple with two young children and this is their second home, so the timeline hasn’t been in a hurry. They decided to have a bit of work done to the house since hiring me, so I’m awaiting word that those improvements have been completed. However, I am excited I’ve finally finished sourcing all the furnishings that will be going in this room.
What I’ve pulled together:
- Occasional chairs
- Media Console
- End tables
- A single large piece of art (they love finding treasures on their own)
- Stock window treatments (maybe…)
- Light fixture & lamps
- Paint color
To the left are my computerized room concept and the Mood Board for this project. I need to do one final check on-site before they get to see it. All items are representational but may not be the final pieces.
I must say, I just love this color palette for their mountain cabin. I’m looking forward to sharing this family-friendly space with my clients.
7 Steps to a Dreamy Master Bedroom
There is always a method to my madness when developing a plan for a master bedroom. It should be a complete oasis from the world. This was a blog post I wrote in 2016, full of questions for you to think about as you plan a Master Bedroom Makeover. If you’d like to read the entire text it can be found by clicking here. Otherwise, here are the “highlights”:
- Start with the BED – mattress, headboard, size
- Bedding sets the tone – go as luxurious as you can afford
- Storage is important – clear the clutter, organize the closet
- Adding other furnishings – dressers, nightstands, armoires, etc.
- What lighting do you need? Lamps, chandeliers, closets
- Color sets the mood – choosing a restful color palette
- Personalize the space – make it all about YOU
I absolutely love redoing Master Bedrooms. What better treat for yourself this Valentine’s Day than a space to retreat from the world? So often this space becomes a “dumping ground” within our homes. Like an oversized junk drawer – if it didn’t have a home, we just pile it in Mom or Dad’s bedroom. Say no to the clutter and the disorganization. Say yes to a relaxing spot within your home that you can’t wait to go back to every single day.

Choosing the Right Paint Sheen
You’ve got the absolute perfect color for your room. It’s going to be stunning. And when you go to purchase it, you find overwhelm once again at having to decide upon the actual sheen to use. Choosing the proper paint sheen can be the difference between a beautiful paint job and one that just doesn’t look quite right.
The easiest formula to follow is to think about function with your paint. How a room is used will dictate the durability you need with your paint.
I’m one who will rarely if ever recommend a flat paint. I love that soft, velvety reflection of lamp light against a beautifully painted wall. However, if I found a room that had wall problems, like a bow in the drywall, I may recommend it in that scenario.
And a final word on choosing paints: Don’t skimp quality for price tag. I recommend Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints to my clients because they are worth the extra cost to get a beautiful finish. While there are other great paints available, those two brands are the most readily available in the Shenandoah Valley.
- Kitchens & Bathrooms: Semi-gloss. These are the easiest to clean, and these highest-traffic areas often have splatters that must be cleaned often.
- Family Rooms & Living Rooms: Satin. Easy to clean but offers a soft reflective quality. Good at hiding imperfections but spend extra time if needed doing your prep work.
- Dining Room: Eggshell or Satin. This is usually not such a high-traffic area, but you will want a soft reflective glow when lighting is on.
- Master Bedrooms: Satin or Matte in a highly saturated color. While bedrooms get a lot of use, they aren’t usually considered high-traffic areas.
- Kids’ Bedrooms: Satin. Clean-ability and the dents & dings that will surely happen.
- Ceilings: Flat. But don’t be afraid of color on your ceiling if it’s worthy of being highlighted.
- Window & Door Trim: High gloss or semi-gloss. These areas need wiped down often and you want something easy to clean. Do keep in mind that a high gloss paint will show every imperfection, so be diligent with your prep work.
Please share this Newsletter with a Friend!!
I will admit, I’ve struggled to come up with the best way to publish the newsletter. In the end, anything I tried made it a hassle to read and everything would have been way too small for a mobile device. So a scrolling web page hidden within my site is where I landed.
I know I was bad last year about actually sending one out, but it’s intertwined in my calendar now. Okay, so I work on it late into the night when I’m not working on client projects. But it is a lot of fun for me to do. The goal this year is that my blog posts will actually be written for the newsletter first, and then turned into blog posts within my site after ya’ll have gotten to read them. That can save me some work.
I hope you’ll share this with a friend. If you were a friend who received it, you can subscribe by clicking right here. You can also follow Bluestone Decorating on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
Until next time… Crystal
