I’ve been thinking for several weeks about my Word of the Year for 2017. I like it to encompass all areas of my life – my family, my relationships outside my home, my personal growth, my faith, my business, and every goal I set for myself. I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but I do try to incorporate a “theme” for every thing I do each year.

My Word of the Year for 2017 is “Inner Beauty”

Crystal Ortiz age 7
My brothers and I, circa 1981. Weren’t we cuties?

I must face the facts – I’m getting older. I’m not a youngster anymore who can charm her way through life. And I’ve found that it IS what’s on the inside that counts.

My family doesn’t love me for what I look like. They love me for who I am on the inside. I try to put everyone else first, lead my children by example, and be the voice of reason in their lives.

My friends are attracted to my personality. Yes, I have a sarcastic, quick wit and can drop a one-liner in a heartbeat. But the flip side of that is I would offer the shirt off my back on a cold January day and not bat an eye at it, if my friend needed it. Yes, I’m a Gemini. We thrive on being two sides of the same coin.

My Clients have experienced this as well – I work hard to truly listen to what they want and what they’re willing to do to achieve it. I try to offer fresh ideas and inspirations so they feel good about their home, themselves, and their decision to hire me.

Having a Word of the Year brings FOCUS

I feel as if I spin in circles some days, certain that I have adult ADHD and that if I just can be a better version of me, then I would reach Nirvana, or Valhalla, or something crazy like that. By focusing this year on “Inner Beauty”, I can determine what books I want to read next (reading is a passion for me). What business guru I want to follow. How I want to grow in my relationships. Decisions can be made to prioritize based on my word of the year.

How does “Inner Beauty” relate to Interior Decorating?

Aha! This is where this post relates to Bluestone Decorating!

Discover Your Home's Inner Beauty: Let Bluestone Interior Decorating help you - Word of the Year 2017

Your home wants to be beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. She wants a makeover – and you know that you will feel better about yourself if she gets one too. Better prepared to have friends visit. Better prepared to sit down in the morning for a little time with your Devotionals. More at peace when things are situated just right, with a fresh new look through the eyes of a pro.

Does she just need a fresh look?

Sometimes we feel better when we just try a new outfit out of clothes we already own. Here’s a Challenge for you: Let someone younger than you plan your wardrobe for the next week, using only what you already have in your closet. She (or he) will pull together outfits you never thought of, and you’ll be amazed at how different you feel wearing them. I’m going to ask my college-age daughter to do this for me.

This is what my Basic package is like. I do the same thing, but we use your furniture and accessories. We try things in ways or places you may never have thought of.

Maybe it’s time to add something new…

You know what it’s like to go buy a new pair of shoes, or a new outfit. You can’t wait to try them on, and your friends ooh and ahh about them. I was in Ulta a few weeks ago and learned they offer makeup lessons. Sign me up! It’s not something I’ve ever mastered. Maybe I don’t have to look my age…

My Advanced Package is very similar. We may add new lamps, or a piece of art, but most of the items are things you already own. Perhaps we paint the walls. And then I Style it all up and you have a fresh new room customized for you.

Or We Can Just Start at the Beginning

I’m not talking about running around nekkid. Imagine though, if you got to get a completely new wardrobe!! Like, you lost 40 pounds and your old clothes just can’t work for you anymore. You have to have something, right? Stop tightening the belt and just go get something that fits properly and doesn’t make you look frumpy.

Most of my Clients are empty nesters, or are on the verge of being that way, like me. We’ve been losing hundred-pound-children as they’ve grown up for the past few years. We waited 20 years to buy new furniture because we knew it would just get destroyed before now. I know – I once found a PB&J sandwich down the cushions of a sofa.

For you, my dear, let’s go all out. Let’s go Premium. Bespoke. Top-of-the-line (within budget, of course). The custom upholstered sofa and chairs. The custom window treatments. Picked-for-you paint colors. Lighting, Art, Accessories – all of it completely styled to flatter your personality and taste. And shopping with my Designer Discount, of course!

After All, It’s What’s on the Inside that Counts

I love this quote and made it part of my graphic for this post:

“Your outer beauty will capture the eyes, your inner beauty will capture the heart.”

-Steven Aitchison

So my dear, it’s time for you to start feeling better about who you are inside, and expressing that through how you live in your home. Let your home capture your heart. I don’t design rooms, I interpret dreams. And your home should be a manifestation of who you are and who you were born to be.

And a place where you can curl up in your jammies with no makeup and still  feel good about who you are. Because it’s what’s on the INSIDE that counts.
